About Us - Intro
Stem Town, Inc. was formed in 1982 as a non-profit organization: To Provide a community service program with program components: Stem & Digital Education, Employment & Entrepreneurship Skills Training, Financial Literacy & Investor Education, Tutoring & Counseling, Fitness & nutritional Wellness and Violence Prevention Training.
To improve the skills of youths, youths with learning disabilities and young single mothers who are educationally and economically disadvantaged; To reduce and eliminate the high rate of illiteracy, school dropouts, unemployment, obesity and the violence epidemic in the community and in the inner city neighborhoods of Buffalo, New York.
With our Stem & Digital Education, employment and entrepreneurship skills training curriculum, these youths will have the opportunity to become an integral part of the community in a positive way. Our violence prevention training component works aggressively with law enforcement and is specially designed to address violence and behavioral problems that continue to plague our community and our very existence.
Our board, staff and volunteers have outstanding qualifications with community involvement experience. They are skill specialists who meet with each participant one-on-one to diagnose their strengths and weaknesses. We then devise an intensive program to address their particular needs and to expand their overall skills. We are in high crime and drugs-infested neighborhoods to make a difference in youths' lives. We received out initial funding from Citibank, J.P. Morgan Chase, Verizon and the Josephine Goodyear Foundation.
The funds raised is used for skills specialist trainers to provide skills training classes and workshops for our program components. The program promotes and inspires self-sufficiency through education and non-violent behavior. The program brings new solutions to countless problems that continue to impede success in this community and to reduce ongoing community tragedies.
At the conclusion of the 12 month program, 99-101 participants will demonstrate a pre-post test gain of at least 2 or more academic grade levels advancement. Further, our goals is for participants to demonstrate a 38% increase in their moral reasoning abilities, 25% increase in Stem & Digital education, 40% reduction in the inner city obesity rate, 35% reduction in domestic and violence behavior, and stay on scheduled for two entrepreneurship start-ups each year.
There are very few major corporations and foundations in Buffalo, New York. Therefore, in order to be successful, it is imperative that the program obtains support from within as well as outside the city of Buffalo. The program is clearly making a difference, but additional funding is required.
